If you are anything like me, you can't wait for the warm days of summer to arrive. And they are finally here! (well, technically Spring). I can definitely say that I enjoy spending more time outdoors than I do indoors. And fortunately here in Naperville there are many opportunities to spend time outdoors to enjoy the warm weather.
There's pretty much something for everyone. You can golf, bike, hike, swim, dine outdoors, listen to music and so much more. But I've narrowed it down to my top 10 fun things to do in Naperville this summer.
1. Trolley Tour
Whether your a resident of Naperville or just visiting, a tour on the trolley is a must. You'll learn about old Naperville, and what we call new Naperville! It's a one hour Historic Tour of Naperville that blends the past with the present, highlight's how Naperville has grown, and includes some fun stories! The cost is $16. Tour times are every Friday at 11:00 am from June - August, and every second Thursday at 5:15pm from May - September.
2. Paddleboats and Kayaking
Enjoy the paddleboats, kayaking and paddleboards for another season! Fun times are had at the Paddleboat Quarry on either a paddleboat or kayak. But if you're a bit more adventurous you can kayak or paddleboard through downtown Naperville on the Dupage river. Rentals are available from May - October through the Naperville Park District and through Naperville Kayak.
3. Centennial Beach
Opening day is for Centennial Beach is May 26th. And what makes Centennial Beach so special is that it's an historic quarry that holds an amazing 6.2 million gallons of water that starts with zero depth and goes as deep as 15 feet. It's not your typical pool. There's a sand area for the family to enjoy, as well as a picnic area to have a bite to eat. You can choose to bring your own food or purchase food at the Centennial Grill. It's the place to be on a warm day.
4. Farmer Markets
Nothing says summer more than Farmers Markets, and here in Naperville you can chose from three. On Saturday mornings at the 5th Ave Station parking lot from June - October you can purchase fresh fruits, veggies and more open from 7am - 12pm. On Wednesdays afternoons at St John's Episcopal Church parking lot from June 7 - Sept 20 open from 3 - 7pm. And new this season on Thursdays at the 95th St Library parking lot from June - Sept open from 3 - 7pm.
5. Classic Car Show
Kick off Father's Day weekend on Saturday, June 16th from 9am - 12pm. At the Classic Car Show, you can check out over 100 classic cars in all makes and models along the Riverwalk, for free. A great event for car enthusiasts!
The first major event of the season is Naperville's Ribfest hosted by the Exchange Club of Naperville. It's an amazing 4th of July celebration that includes; award winning ribs from across the country, internationally known musical artists (unbelievable lineup for 2018!), carnival and activities for the family and a spectacular fireworks display! This is an event that should not be missed.
7. Summer Concerts
Naperville offers two summer concerts. The first one, where you can enjoy the fine sounds of The Naperville Municipal Band. The concerts start in June on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm, located at Central Park in Downtown Naperville. All performances are free to the public.
The second is brought to you by the Naperville Park District, a summer concert series - Concerts in Your Park. The concerts are held at various parks, on various dates, starting in June. They are held on Sunday evenings at 7pm. So bring the family, friends, chairs, and blankets to enjoy a relaxing evening of music.
8. Naperville Wine Festival
The Historic Naper Settlement will host the Naperville Wine Festival. You'll have an opportunity to sample from more than 250 wines from around the world. There will be wine seminars, cooking demonstrations and more. So grab some friends and enjoy an evening of wine, food and music. The event will take place on August 24 from 5 - 10pm & August 25 from 3 - 8pm.
9. Last Fling
A family-friendly festival brought to you by the The Naperville Jaycees'. The Last Fling takes place over Labor Day Weekend from August 31 - September 3. Located at Downtown Naperville, it offers a wide variety of attractions for all ages to enjoy including: a carnival, musical entertainment, Family Fun Land, and more. It's a fun way to say goodbye to summer!
10. Riverwalk Fine Art Fair
The Riverwalk Fine Art Fair is a art exhibition and sale. Held along Naperville’s Riverwalk, on Jackson between Main & Eagle Streets. The event is scheduled for Saturday & Sunday, September 15 & 16 from 10 am to 5 pm. You'll be able to experience an outstanding display of artwork from some of the country’s best artists. Be sure to check it out.
